What you’re seeing here in this video is what is known as a Pavlovian, or conditioned response. This is because of a rather famous study by Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov. He trained dogs to associate a buzzer with a meal for them was about to be served. So of course, the dogs’ mouths began to water in anticipation of a tasty meal. This also meant that whenever the lab assistant used the buzzer, but didn’t provide the food straight away, the dogs’ response was the same.
Luke has been conditioned to respond to the sound of the television being turned off at night. He knows that when he hears that chime, it’s cuddle time!
